1. Cleansers

I know you’ve heard of this before and might have been expecting something otherworldly but, cleansers actually do play a role in maintaining your skin. Cleansers help to remove makeup, dirt, oils, and other particles that have gathered on your face during the day. They also remove other skin care products you’ve used during the day and provide a clean surface for the night’s products to work on. Any cleanser you use should be one that will be gentle on your skin because, the older you get, the lower the rate at which new skin cells are produced.

This means that if you use harsh products, it can irritate the skin easily, damage it, make it dry and itchy, and even affect the skin barrier. The skin’s barrier is the upper surface of the skin, the one we see, that helps to protect the skin from environmental harms and retain moisture. Some of such chemicals to look out for in a cleanser are sodium lauryl sulfate, petroleum, and mineral oil-derived products and parabens in all its forms.

Having seen some of the components to avoid in cleansers, here are some to check for before purchase; aloe vera, oat protein, almond oil amongst others. An ideal cleanser is one that doesn’t dry the skin and leaves it tight on use but one that soothes it and removes the dirt while strengthening the skin’s barrier.

2. Toners

Toners are almost always used on the skin after cleansers. Toners help to remove any leftover dirt on the skin, tighten the skin, and reduce the appearance of skin pores which all goes into maintaining the skin’s appearance. The skin normally is acidic and has a pH of about 4.7. The use of harsh cleansers can affect your skin and increase the pH. What a toner does is that it balances your skin out again and reduces the pH.

The pH of the skin can be increased through the use of tap waters containing chlorine and other minerals as well as hard waters which can irritate the skin. If you happen to use mild cleansers, then you likely have no need for a toner. Toners containing salicylic acid and alcohol in all its forms should be avoided. Instead, look for toners containing aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, antioxidants, and peptides. The type of toner to be used is dependent on your skin type and the ingredients used in formulating it.

3. Exfoliating your skin

Exfoliating your skin helps to remove the dirt and dead skin cells that have accumulated on your skin surface. This accumulation is what results in breakouts and wrinkling of your skin, thus leading to faster aging. The dead skin cells give a dull appearance to the skin and would need to be removed to keep it young and glowing. Exfoliating also increases the circulation of blood on your skin, boosts the skin’s recovery process, and presents a clean surface for other skin products. Using the right exfoliant can stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin.

The production of collagen and elastin decreases with age and exfoliating can help to stimulate further production. They are proteins that strengthen the skin and help it to stay bouncy and stretchy which helps to retain its youthfulness. Exfoliants could be physical like sugar or salt scrubs or chemicals-like peels. With age, the use of physical exfoliants is discouraged because they can be too rough on the skin. Chemical exfoliants are advised because they are doused with chemicals that’ll have a good side to it. Using it rightly can help to retain your skin’s good looks while over-exfoliating can damage the skin and make it more prone to wrinkles.

4. Serums

Serums contain very active ingredients designed to deliver immediate results on coming in contact with the skin. Due to their potency, they’re to be used in minute quantities. In purchasing serums, look for ingredients like retinoids, vitamin C, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs),  tea extracts, and niacinamide as they have anti aging skin care qualities. These serums contain antioxidants that help to reverse the adverse effects of environmental pollutants on the skin as well as increase collagen production.

5. Moisturizers

The skin naturally produces oil called sebum which keeps the skin moisturized and waterproof. The production of sebum decreases with age and moisturizing aids the skin in staying hydrated. A good moisturizer is vital in your anti aging skin care. It will trap moisture around your skin and keep it hydrated. In purchasing moisturizers, look for ingredients like glycerine and hyaluronic acid.

6. Sunscreen

Though some skin types seem more resilient to the effects of the sun, sunscreen is a must for all skin types. Exposure to the ultraviolet radiation from the sun damages the skin and causes it to start wrinkling. The use of sunscreen slows down the aging of the skin, helps to maintain an even skin tone, and reduces the incidence of age spots.

7. Picking pimples

Picking pimples pulls at the skin and damages it. Wrinkles appear when the skin is damaged. In the incidence of pimples, use medications, and whatever you do, keep your hands away from your face.

Sleeping with your face against the pillow has been shown to give your face permanent skin wrinkles. To avert this, use a satin pillowcase on your pillow; this will cause your face to slide over the surface and prevent wrinkling. Better still, just sleep on your back if you can do that.

9. Diet

The foods you eat go a long way in slowing down the aging process. Foods like apples, avocados, watermelon, tomatoes, pawpaw, and sweet potatoes contain minerals like vitamins A, C, E, and K which are antioxidants and help to slow down the aging process. Harmful habits like smoking and alcohol consumption should be minimized and if possible stopped altogether. What you eat plays a vital role in the anti aging skin care regime.

10. Little pressure

In using your different skin care products, the application must be done with caution. If too much pressure is applied, it could pull at the skin, irritate it and even damage it which will further cause the skin to wrinkle. Do not use harsh products on your skin, use soft towels, and face cloths and minimize the use of hot or cold water on your skin.

11. Eye creams

Eye creams are specially formulated for the sensitive area under the eyes. The skin under the eyes is prone to wrinkling due to exposure to the sun, squinting, and general eye movements. Eye creams are designed to supply nutrients to that sensitive part of the skin without causing harm. For it to be effective, eye creams should contain retinoids, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid.

12. Exercising

Exercise is often overlooked when seeking to improve our appearances and fight to age. Exercise improves flexibility, posture, your mood, and also gives you soft and glowing skin. Exercise is believed to slow down the activities of cells that promote the aging process. Exercise is quite important for a healthy lifestyle. You don’t need to go all out and register with a gym to keep fit, you can partake in less stressful activities like walking, cycling, rowing, and aerobics. For those with underlying health conditions, they should consult with their health care professional to know the exercises that’ll be ideal for them.
